Additions: Brent Burns, Max Pacioretty, Paul Stastny, Ondrej Kase, Lane Pederson, Dylan Coghlan, Ryan Dzingel, Mackenzie MacEachern, William Lagesson
Subtractions: Vincent Trocheck, Tony DeAngelo, Nino Niederreiter, Max Domi, Ian Cole, Steven Lorentz, Brendan Smith
The Hurricanes had to do some shuffling this offseason in order to replace some key contributors, and they certainly made a nice splash by landing Burns and Pacioretty. When the daunting injury news hit Pacioretty (see below), Carolina was then able to answer by bringing veteran Stastny into the fold. Overall a fairly solid retool from the defending division champs.
Injury Report
Probable For Opener: Frederik Andersen (Knee), Antti Raanta (Knee), Seth Jarvis (Concussion), Ethan Bear (Leg), Mackenzie MacEachern (Upper Body), Ryan Dzingel (Wrist)
Questionable For Opener: -None-
Out To Begin Season: Max Pacioretty (Achilles)
Out For Season: -None-
Both Carolina goalies were injured in the playoffs last season, but both are expected to be ready to go come the start of the season.
As mentioned, the big blow was the torn achilles sustained by Max Pacioretty, which will keep him out until at least February. The blessing in disguise is that it did allow some salary cap flexibility to sign Stastny, so perhaps the Hurricanes will be stronger come playoff time if the current lineup can carry them there.
Projected Lineup
(league ranks in parentheses)
Forwards (6th)
Andrei Svechnikov - Sebastian Aho - Seth Jarvis
Teuvo Teravainen - Paul Stastny - Martin Necas
Ondrej Kase - Jordan Staal - Jesper Fast
Ryan Dzingel - Jesperi Kotkaniemi - Jordan Martinook
Defense (12th)
Jaccob Slavin - Brent Burns
Brady Skjei - Brett Pesce
Dylan Coghlan - Ethan Bear
Goalies (6th)
Frederik Andersen
Antti Raanta
The lineup has some new faces, but the structure is basically the same. The Aho line is back, Staal will continue to center a top shutdown line, and Kotkaniemi and Necas project to fill roles up and down the lineup.
Even on defense, Burns replaces the offensive void left by DeAngelo departing, and Coghlan and Bear are more than capable on the third pair. Once Pacioretty returns, this lineup should prove deep and dangerous down the stretch.

Fantasy Impact
Studs: Sebastian Aho, Frederik Andersen, Andrei Svechnikov, Brent Burns
Duds: -None-
Sleepers: Seth Jarvis, Max Pacioretty
Other Roster Worthy: Teuvo Teravainen
Andersen's numbers may dip a bit from last season, but he is still expected to be a top-10 goalie in fantasy hockey this season. Aho and Svechnikov are fantasy studs based on even-strength production alone, and if Burns can improve the top powerplay unit, you could see some nice bonus production as well.
Jarvis was outstanding as a rookie last season and will have plenty of opportunity to take the sophomore leap this year. Pacioretty will be a nice late-season addition for someone in need of goal scoring from the wing.

If you're searching for more of a chalk pick on a future, look no further than the Canes. We have strong division odds for the club, which in turn translates to solid prospects at further success as well.
The interesting daily bets surrounding Carolina last year usually involved games where Antti Raanta was in net. Sportsbooks dinged the Canes for having a backup in, but Raanta's numbers basically mirrored those of Andersen's. In fact, there's a case to be made that he could be better than the incumbent starter. It's something to monitor again this season.

Playoffs? Very Likely
The Hurricanes should be among the league's absolute best this season, as long as their aging additions don't flame out. Playoffs are an expectation at this point, with a deep playoff run set in their sights. As long as they aren't severely hindered by injuries, we'll be discussing them into April and possibly beyond.
